It’s Resolution Time!

It’s resolution time! That time of the year when you resolve to make changes that will positively affect YOUR FUTURE and the future of your family.

We understand. Drawing on the spirit of the “Covenant with Black America” which promotes making a plan of action to address the primary concerns of African Americans, we will address your primary concerns and help you take control of them with “Take Control Tuesday.”

Each Tuesday you’ll learn about local resources that can help you realize your goals. There will also be other resources listed here that you can access.

Coming up on Take Control Tuesdays:

Tuesday, May 6

On May 17, 2008, our organization will host a Milwaukee Walk toward Wellness. The goal of the event is to get at least 10,000 people to walk toward a better Milwaukee. We will start at 35th and Wisconsin Ave. and end at Sherman Park. After the walk, there will be a health fair, college fair and other activities at Sherman Park. Our success in achieving this goal requires full community participation. We are respectfully requesting you to assist our efforts in making this event a success. May 17, 2008 we as a City will make history.

Your consideration and support of this event will go along way in supporting this community event whose objective is to improve the quality of life for all of Milwaukee. For more information or to register online log onto www.100blackmenofmilwaukee.org.

Topic: NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)

More about NAMI - click here -

NAMI Greater Milwaukee is a non-profit community-based, self-help, support, education and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of those with mental illness, their families, and those touched by mental illness. Programs include:

ASK (Access, Support and Knowledge) is a new NAMI program which provides free consultation and support services specifically for Milwaukee's African American community. ASK started in 2007 thanks to support and partnership from AstraZeneca and the Charles E. Kubly Foundation. Please call our office at (414) 344-0447 if you have questions or are interested in outreach opportunities.

Family-to-Family is a free, 12-week NAMI course for family members and close friendsof individuals with severe mental illnesses. The course is taught by trained family members. Participants learn information about illnesses of the brain and their treatment, coping skills and the power of advocacy. Please call our office at (414) 344-0447 if interested in participating.

In Our Own Voice is the consumer speaker's bureau offered to the public. This NAMI program introduces groups to people who have a diagnosis to those wanting to learn about their lives. Speakers within the program are trained to tell their own stories. It’s through disclosure and personal contact that barriers break down and stigma begins to erode. If your group is interested in having a trained speaker address your group, or if you’re interested in becoming an In Our Own Voice trained speaker, please call the office at (414) 344-0447.
